Pookolai is a village in coastal Tamil Nadu, India which was very badly affected by the 2004 tsunami. After the waters receded, families began to rebuild. Yet unfortunately, they were immediately confronted by a serious issue – the salinity levels of ground water had gone up, forcing the people of the village to consume water from surface sources, which was often contaminated.
This resulted in people (especially children) falling prey to water-borne diseases. Their ill-health resulted in absenteeism in schools. By missing out on their education, these children lost their ticket out of poverty.
Your donation enabled Ekoventure to install a syphon water filter in the local school in Pookolai. This water filter removes bacteria and parasites from contaminated water and the children now drink pure and safe drinking water. School attendance has started to rise because water-borne diseases are held at bay. In the photograph, you can see how happy the children of the school are to get clean drinking water.
Thank you for your generosity.
