Pudupattinam is a village in coastal Tamil Nadu, India which was very badly affected by the tsunami of 2004. After the waters receded and families started picking up the pieces of their lives, they found that the tsunami had left behind a new problem — the salinity levels of ground water had gone up, forcing the people of the village to consume water from surface sources, which was often contaminated.
This resulted in people, and children in particular, falling prey to water-borne diseases. The poor health of these youth kept them out of school and prevented them from accessing their best path out of poverty.
Your donation ensured Ekoventure installed a syphon water filter in the local school in Pudupattinam. This water filter removes bacteria and parasites from contaminated water so the children can drink pure and safe drinking water. School attendance has risen because water-borne diseases are held at bay. In the photograph, you can see how the siphon water filter holds pride of place in the classroom- in some ways, it is even more important than the blackboard, because it ensures that these kids continue attending school.
Thank you for your kindness.
