Thank you for gifting a kitchen garden to Savithri, a resident of Petharangapuram village. Here is her story in her own words.
“I have 4 children (3boys, 1 girl). My husband is an Agricultural cooli, also goes for fuel wood collection and sells them in the local village. We are having 0.5 acre of land where we are cultivating ‘Pichipoo’ (Jasmine). I look after my flower garden. Our whole family is involved in harvesting the flowers. Flower cultivation is our main livelihood activity. Besides this during free time I am involved in rolling beedi through which I earn Rs. 50 daily.
I was invited for a meeting on Solid waste management by the local animator. I received a drum after completing the training on SWM. Daily my family members use to put the waste in the drum and applied bokashi over the waste. First time we used the compost from the drum to my Gusva and banana plants. After that the plants were looking healthy and green. Guava fruits size was bigger than earlier. Later I went for training on kitchen garden and got different varieties of vetable seeds. Now near my house and in the land where ever little space is available we are growing vegetables. We are using the vegetables from our own garden so we feel happy. We sold tomato for Rs 105 and I opened a bank account with this money. I share the vegetable seeds from my garden with others.”
